 Telluride's Heritage
Telluride's Festivals                             Back To Top     Telluride's Arts & Culture

The San Juan Mountains surrounding Telluride were the summer hunting grounds for the Ute Indians. Spanish explorers in search of an overland route from Mexico to California entered the Telluride region in the late 1700s. They named the mountain range the San Juans. French fur trappers were likely the next group of area visitors in the early 1800’s.

Gold was discovered in the Denver area in 1859 and thus began the Colorado Gold Rush. Prospectors and miners fanned-out into the Colorado Rockies reaching nearby Silverton in the early 1860s. The miners disregarded the treaties that granted much of the area to the Ute Nation. In 1873, another treaty was entered that ceded much of Southwest Colorado back to the U.S. Government for $25,000 per year.

The first miners settled in the area in 1872. In 1878, the town of Columbia was platted and applied for a post office. The request was refused since a Columbia California already existed. It was the Postmaster General that established a post office called “Telluride” for the town of Columbia in 1880. Columbia was officially renamed Telluride in 1887.

Access to Telluride was via Silverton over Ophir Pass – a difficult route and limited by winter weather. In 1890, the Rio Grande Southern Railroad completed their track into Telluride. With easy access, many immigrants arrived to work in Telluride’s mining district. The population swelled to 5,000 residents.

In 1891, L.L. Nunn, George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla shocked the world by successfully transmitting alternating current from an area hydroelectric plant to a gold mine to run operations. Today, the entire global electrical grid operates using this A/C-current technology.

Mining continued to be the area’s economic engine until the unset of the Great Depression in 1929. A few mining revivals occurred over the decades, but by the 1960’s, Telluride’s population had dwindled to around 600-residents. Looking for a tourist renaissance, Telluride was designated as a National Historic Landmark District in 1963.

In the early 1970’s, a ski area was created on the north south of Gold Hill down to the south side of town. Since then, the Telluride Ski Corp. has expanded the ski area multiple-times and created Mountain Village.

 Telluride's Festivals
Telluride's Heritage                             Back To Top     Telluride's Arts & Culture

Inspired by the creation of a Telluride ski area, local artists and culture lovers began organizing summer festivals. Many of these festivals are in their third-decade of existence. Here is a brief description of many of the current festivals.

Telluride Film Festival

“Each Labor Day weekend, the tiny mountain village of Telluride, Colorado triples in size. Swells of passionate film enthusiasts flood the town for four days of total cinematic immersion, embarking on a viewing odyssey, blissfully spending entire days in flickering dark rooms. With only an appreciation of celluloid to guide them, these devotees flock to the show, year after year. Why? Blind faith. We don’t reveal the program until everyone lands in town. Yet the Telluride family trusts that a unique experience will unfold.”

Telluride Bluegrass Festival

“The Annual Telluride Bluegrass coincides with the Summer Solstice and the days surrounding the full moon; the longest day of the year; the beginning of summer. It's a magical time of sun and light, when the high country of Colorado puts away its skis and grabs hiking boots, kayaks, and a low-back festival chair to take in "Bluegrass."

Telluride Chamber Music

“The Telluride Chamber Music Festival has been bringing music to Telluride since 1973.  This year we continue to bring you chamber music as it was originally intended, up close and personal!. Our festival creates a spontaneous connection between audience and musicians which lifts the human spirit. You are invited to take a break from your busy life and enjoy one of life's gentler pleasures by hearing chamber music at its best.  Our Artistic Director, Roy Malan, is planning another great festival for our enjoyment. Roy is the concertmaster with the San Francisco Ballet.”

Imogene Pass Run

“The Imogene Pass Run (IPR) is a 17.1 mile point-to-point mountain race within the western San Juan mountains of Colorado, run along a route which connects the towns of Ouray (7810 ft.) and Telluride (8820 ft.) by way of 13,120 foot Imogene Pass. The IPR is held on the first Saturday after the Labor Day holiday, at the seasonal transition from late Summer to early Fall. Mountain weather at this time is famously "squirrelly" (rapidly changeable), and participants through the years have encountered a variety of weather conditions ranging from virtually perfect to terrible. This spectrum of weather during the race is in fact part of its lure and mystique. In good weather years the challenge of the mountainous traverse is rewarded by unsurpassed vistas and no small feeling of accomplishment upon crossing the finish line. In bad weather years, the wind, fog, rain and/or snow along the course make the successful arrival in Telluride a virtual rite of passage into the realm of true mountain running.”

By day, experience live blues, rock, funk, gospel, and soul, the best micro brews from over 50 micro breweries during Saturday's Grand Tasting, a wide variety of food and craft vendors, children's activities, and more - all on the festival grounds.
